We woke in the notch on Sunday morning from our previous days hike over Waumbek and the Weeks. Water was an issue for us as we had encountered none on the day before. We packed it up without breakfast and only 20 ounces of water left. It was windy and raining lightly. We headed up Terrace, immediately we found a small brook. But the map showed another up high and we decided to keep going. It wasn't a smart decision. We headed up the steep side of Terrace, the previous afternoon it loomed above our campsite and I knew it was going to be a tough climb. There was no water at the place on the map and so we continued up to the top, taking a short spur trail to the summit. Now a nice walk across a ridge, down a bit and then up again over what seemed like another peak? Finally down to Bunnell Notch where it was raining steady. Out of water and looking at 1.8 to Cabot and sure water we decided with the weather to head down Bunnell Notch and to York Pond Rd. Quite a long walk out with the road and my car being parked beyond the gate to the Fish Hatchery. We did find quite a bit of water on the BN trail and filled up there. But despite plans to do Cabot and beyond, due to lack of water and food, we made the right decision to head down. |
