Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Wednesday, November 1, 2017
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Trailhead is at the top of 1.3-mile Iron Mountain Road, which is a steep, somewhat rough dirt road. I decided not to risk it with my small vehicle, and parked at the junction at the bottom and walked up the road. A vehicle with AWD and a higher ground clearance would probably have been fine - there was one vehicle (an SUV) at the trailhead when I came down.

Comments
Comments: The Iron Mountain Trail is very rough and eroded, with lots of loose rocks and exposed roots. However, considering the horror stories that I've read in books and online about the Iron Mountain Trail, I didn't really think it was that bad. Sure, the rocks and roots can be annoying at times, and you have to carefully watch where you place your feet. But this is New Hampshire - every trail has rocks and roots!

The trail was very easy to follow up to the summit. The section from the summit to the south cliffs was mostly easy to follow as well, but there were a few spots where I had to rely on these very small cairns (i.e. 2-3 rocks). You should also make sure to remember where the trail reaches the cliffs, because it's not obvious at all unless you remember where it was.

Saw only two other people on the trail today. Really nice views in many directions.
