Snow from dusting to 1-2" up high and covering ice everywhere. early stream crossings problematic, put on spikes and used ice frozen on branches of spruce fallen into water at one and log across water on another. Ice flows started coming down Square Ledge, white, blue, black, brown, even green, very heavy completely covering trail in several places, worst in steep spots. Even with spikes a lot bushwhacks and tree grabbing necessary. Axe was handy but full crampons and 2 axes would have been welcome in many spots - certainly would have been faster. Coming down from Nanamocomuck very difficult. Coming off Hedgehog there is very steep, scramble area that could have qualified as Class 2! Had to bushwhack to the right(south), dropped my pack down 8-10' face and trusted a couple spruce branches to do a layback! Rest of hike uneventful(flat). |
