snow conditions were very different in this area than they were last week. the base on the road and five summers trail is diminishing. still enough for snowshoeing, but getting thin in spots. i followed five summers trail to a logical point southwest of south lucias and hit the woods. off trail snow varied from a thin layer of new wet snow over bare ground to firm snow a couple feet deep. woods were open all the way transitioning from hardwoods to evergreen before the western bump, the one with the spot elevation. on the way i crossed over fresh bear tracks numerous times as he appeared to have the same agenda as me. i then dropped down and made the short ascent to the eastern bump and recognized highpoint. in the name of dilligence i would recommend visiting both bumps. i doubled back in my tracks in increasingly sticky snow to the five summers trail and back out. |
