| Comments: |
Saw lots of tracks, some with yaks and micro's, but after 1.5 miles up Champney, crampons become a necessity, not an option. We took the loop and climbed up beside the falls before rejoining the main trail, and from that point forward the trail was almost 100% ice, frequently very thick and hard ice.
Summit dome was tricky and dangerous due to poor mixture of rock and ice. Not enough ice for crampons to properly bite, so we slipped on rocks while wearing crampons. Not enough dry rock to take crampons off or you'd slip on what ice there was...in a couple of weeks with some storms I'm guessing rocks will be better covered to give crampons more purchase. |
