For the most part, the trail is a wonderful, white sidewalk to the summit. Now for the parts that weren't a nice sidewalk: small patches of exposed ice for which light traction was sufficient, the ledges were pretty much packed snow over ice and easy to negotiate, except for the very last steep one between Mt. Surprise and Moriah. That ledge has a lot of exposed ice, I got partway up and bushwhacked; on the way down, I bushwhacked around it completely. I carried more aggressive traction with me, but didn't feel it was worth changing for this one ledge. Lazy? Yeah. There were probably around 5-6 trees, mostly above Mt. Surprise to step over or limbo under - not bad at all!
Beautiful bluebird day for a solo hike, and only saw a nice young couple doing the same hike. |
