Most of the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail was like a sidewalk- save for some posthole-y areas near LOC hut, the trail was hard packed nearly all the way to the hut. I wore microspikes from the trailhead to treeline, then switched to crampons, and kept them on from there to the summit and back to the hut. The Crawford Path was packed reasonably well, but there was some sidehilling a short distance past the hut that was not fun with crampons. I'd say that the hike could've been done with either light traction or full traction, but I brought them both and ended up using both.
What a day for my first winter hike up the Rockpile! Great trail conditions, gentle weather, and excellent views made for a fun, challenging hike! Lots of people enjoying the day as well. |
