Comments: Lovely, mild sunny day though windy. We started in snowshoes because the Trailhead sign requested it on the ski trail, although we saw only 1 other party doing so. Really could have used spikes about midway up Old Path due to hard ice floes in that midsection. Switched to spikes after summiting South and starting ascent on Old Path to N. Doublehead at recommendation of others because of slippery tree roots. Not sure it was the best move as the trail was getting pretty slushy by afternoon. Spikes did help at North summit and around the cabin.

We thought we were taking the gentler, safer choice by descending the ski trail, but my son fell when the thin snowy layer slipped to reveal blue ice underneath, smacking his cheek and cutting a nice V in his eyebrow. Kudos to the Memorial Hospital urgent care in Conway for timely and caring help, including superglue instead of stitches. Quite the place to be apres-trails apparently - waiting room was packed.

TBH I was a little underwhelmed with the views at South Doublehead summit ledge - though ice stopped me from going too far out into the westerly view of Carrigain and the Moats. Maybe the trees have grown since the guidebooks were written. But It was lovely descending the ski trail with Carter Notch and the Presi’s as your guide. And any day soaking in the mountains while you work off life’s stresses is a good day for me.
