Squam Range Traverse (most). Sandwich Notch Rd is well packed and spikes were perfect. Took one step onto Crawford-Ridgepole Trail and out came the snowshoes. One steep, icy, narrow section on CRT as we approached first bump below Doublehead was a tweener for shoes or spikes. Went to spikes for a bit and then back to snowshoes (would post hole badly without them and even some minor potholing with them) which we stayed in up to Mt. Percival. The entire first section of CRT to Percival had a very old trough but we were only tracks in sometime on it. Blazing is sketchy in this section. Lots of moose sign. At Mt. Percival we went to spikes and stayed in them over Mt. Morgan to junction of CRT and Mt. Morgan Tr. From junction had to go back to snowshoes. As in the CRT up to Mt. Percival we were only tracks here for sometime. Last half of CRT from Mt. Webster to Old Mtn Rd was again a tweener of spikes or shoes. No real potholing but enough granular snow to make your feet slip/splay outward which can be annoying. At intersection we all went to spikes for the hike out on Old Mtn. Rd. Still soft but very uneven, wet spots and post hole (lots of sugaring going on here) made them the right choice. One of the group went up Livermore and out Prescott Tr. to Old Highway (S). Last section of OH was awful with lots of erosion and VERY uneven walking with deep drifts, water etc. Long but fun day with a great group. |
