Night hike with friend. Was amazed to see nearly all of the ice from two weeks ago gone. We both brought spikes with us but never used them. The lower portion of White Dot trail was quite wet and muddy, as temp was still well above freezing. There were a few sections of slushy ice remaining high up on mountain where it levels out before summit cone. We were able navigate these without spikes due to soft nature of ice. If temp drops below freezing, some may want traction here. Summit cone was free of snow and ice and it was nice to stay in sticky rubber approach shoes on these steep slab sections. |
