Trails: Nineteen-Mile Brook Trail, Carter Dome Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, March 3, 2018
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Spaces available @ NMB trailhead in the morning and afternoon. It's worth noting when the plows edged Route 16 snow ended up a little thick and messy at the entrance because that wasn't plowed away - so you may need to get a 'running start' to exit the lot.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow - Wet/Sticky
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Snow/ice bridges were stable enough at the tributary crossings on NMBT. There's a log at the last crossing if needed.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: There's maybe 6-8 fallen trees on CDT from NMBT to Zeta Pass requiring all types of passage: step over, crawl under, sit-n-spin, whack-around. That said there is ample evidence of trail clearing from the fall storm so thanks to those who took that on.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: I saw a couple on the NMBT.
Bugs
Bugs: Didn't see any.
Lost and Found
Lost and Found: Nothing.

Comments
Comments: I'd say about 4 inches of new powdery snow had fallen here yesterday - just enough to make for a nice snowshoe trek. The only minor downside was it made for a few 'slide steps' on the side slopes since the new snow wasn't attaching to the existing trail pack (yet). The NMBT was well packed but the CDT only showed two new snowshoe tracks in front of me on ascent - I caught up to them just below the summit. Most people I saw (maybe a dozen or so) had snowshoes. I wore mine the entire day with no regrets. On the way down the snow started to get a little soft and sticky.

I picked this route due to it being sheltered from the wind the entire way and the relative lack of views for what was supposed to be a cloudy day. Other than the summit area I didn't feel any wind - and even at the top it wasn't bad at all - however on descent the cloud cover broke and Mr. Sun came out making for some nice views through the trees. On the summit one person's snowshoe binding broke so I gave her some zip ties to MacGyver it. Though not necessary I was offered a yummy little beverage in return so thanks for that :)

Some other random intel: Carter-Moriah Trail heading N from Zeta Pass was broken in the afternoon. The section ascending Mt. Hight from Carter Dome was broken but the N section was untouched. Rainbow and Black Angel trails also untouched. Folks I spoke with coming up to Carter Dome from the hut all wore crampons.
