Not a primo Bondcliff day, but we were curious, so we checked it out. Skied Lincoln Woods trail, which was nicely packed (both snowshoes and skis). To our dismay, no tracks on Bondcliff trail after the bridge. At that point we knew we were not going to summit, but it was 8am and it was lovely in the woods, mild temps and gently falling snow, so we kept walking. Also figured we could help pack the trail for at least a portion of it. Two hikers came by as we changed into snowshoes. They are the real Bondcliff Trail heroes, breaking the entire trail. 10" of fresh powder. We followed along, finally catching up to them right at the first very steep incline. We pitched in to break that part out while they took a break. More snow higher up. Duh. Slide back every step. We turned around at the hairpin turn just before the switchbacks. They continued on, as they were planning to camp. Trail is broken but still very floaty and powdery. Only 5 people were out on that trail Sat. PLEASE USE SNOWSHOES!
All in all a great day in the Pemi Wilderness and good shakedown for a winter Bondcliff hike.
"Take long walks in stormy weather or through deep snows in the fields and woods, if you would keep your spirits up. Deal with brute nature. Be cold and hungry and weary." - H. D. Thoreau |
