My tale of woe: Need Cannon and Kinsmans for March. My neighbor went to Lonesome Hut yesterday with 20 high school age boys. Thought I would hike to the hut, join them wherever they went. Less that 6" powder on the trail to Lonesome. Noted a trench coming down the HiCannon. Continued up to the lake. Saw there was also a trench under the 6" of fresh snow on the Dodge cutoff. Thought I was in luck. Easy enough to get to the HiCannon and up it about 1/4 mile. I thought I had just wandered off the trail but, alas, that is as far as the trench went. Sinking in almost knee deep here. So back to the hut and plan A - follow the 20 high school boys who went up the Jimmy. Caught up to them at the bottom of the steeps. Got as far as Kinsman Pond about 1:15. The chaperones thought that was probably as far as they would go. Figured no point in killing myself breaking the .6 mile to No. Kinsman only to have to come back later for South so turned around. Those young bucks made really good time in the knee deep snow. And 23 people make a firm track. Soon others will be able to finish the job. But NOT the 3 bare booters with no snow shoes I met coming up on my descent of the Jimmy. |
