| Comments: |
Nineteen Mile Brook Trail had an inch or two of new snow over a packed base. Still very soft on Friday, we used snowshoes. A school group of 30 snowshoed into Carter Notch Hut later in the day, so track is firm.
Wildcat Ridge Trail had snow 2-4 ft deep, with deeper drifts and areas of wind slab. Now and then there were signs of recent snowshoe activity, possibly one person. Very difficult to stay on the trail, especially after we were halfway up the steep 0.7 mile section to Wildcat A. We completely lost the trail and spent considerable time trying to re-find it; multiple dead ends with about 0.2 mi to go. Finally found the trail and slowly managed to push through the walls of snow to reach Wildcat A just before our turnaround time of 3 pm, took 3 hrs 45 minutes just for the 0.7 mi climb. The ridge beyond A was untracked at that time. We returned the way we came and our tracks were completely blown-in in many places by the time we descended. |
