Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: i parked at camp walt whitman off of cape moonshine road in piermont. my understanding was visitors should park at the end of the access road, but with no good parking available i drove up the plowed road and parked in a pushed back area. an employee shortly drove by and was very helpful suggesting i continue up the road to the camp and park in their large plowed area (near maintenance shed). my take away is that in winter as long as you park out of the way of any ongoing maintenance operations and don't block the road you are probably ok. if possible the start of the access road should be the go to.

Comments
Comments: from where i parked i followed the main camp road to the signed start of the trail. i was happy to see the remains of an existing snowshow trough heading up. there was roughly 6-12" of new/blown snow in the trough, but still much easier going than breaking from scratch. the track was more blown in through an area of logging with some partially wind packed sections. the snow in the track wasn't adhering at all to the base so once on the steeps back sliding was not uncommon. i did a short bushwhack around the steepest/scrambliest pitch shortly before reaching the ridge line. the last spruce/fir stretch to the summit is fairly grown in which is compounded by some decent snow depth. i walked off the trail once, but quickly corrected before reaching the open/ledgy summit with it great directional views. the descent quick in the loose snow. a nice hike to end the winter season.
