| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
Plenty of parking. 6 cars when I arrived. Note that recent plowing has made it difficult to see the trailhead right across the street. There is no clear path over the berm, but you were using snowshoes anyway, right? |
|
| Surface Conditions: |
Snow - Packed Powder/Loose Granular, Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Stable) |
|
| Recommended Equipment: |
Snowshoes, Traction, Ice Axe |
|
| Water Crossing Notes: |
All were bridged and almost unnoticeable as crossings |
|
| Trail Maintenance Notes: |
Trail in excellent shape. Duckunders weren't difficult even with snowpack |
|
| Dog-Related Notes: |
Saw one, although there were no tracks on the summit. Not sure how a dog would negotiate the final pitches |
|
| Bugs: |
On the way down I saw what looked like snow fleas but didn't stop to investigate as the sun was sinking behind Wiley... |
|
| Lost and Found: |
REWARD OFFERED. Black with Magnets: Near the trailhead, or even in the lot, I lost a top of the line Sirius balaclava (that I was sure I'd pushed into the pocket with the green zipper!) I used my backup facemask at the summit with no problem. Please email me for a return address. |

A great hike. Well packed trail almost all the way. Of the 13 folks I met, all but one or two wore snowshoes. (I don't think the single bare-booter summitted.) Crampons might have been better on the extremely steep sections just below the summit. Somehow I made it up that part with snowshoes, and went back down sideways(digging the front of the snowshoe into the unpacked snow on the margin, while I grasped any branches within reach). Descent is treacherous any way you do it. Summit wind and cold were much less than expected. |
