Comments
Comments: Mixed bag of conditions today. Parker, Lost Farm, and Cliff Walk trails saw very light use compared to the White Dot Trail, and I had to keep my eyes peeled at times to pick out the way to go. Light traction, despite snow balling up on the spikes, worked well. Some icy spots on Cliff Walk. Smith Connecting Link saw the lightest use of any trail I took today, particularly beyond the Amphitheater Trail junction. Actually lost the trail between that junction and the White Cross Trail, and I ended up following boot prints uphill through the woods, ultimately popping onto the White Dot Trail just after its junction with the White Cross Trail. From there, the White Dot Trail was like a packed sidewalk from treeline to summit, but once back below treeline, the footway got steadily more muddy, slushy, and wet. In the coming days, the main trails should be fine, but definitely use good judgment when hiking on the secondary trails (like the ones I took), as they in general aren't used very much and can be tough to follow with snow on the ground.
