Comments
Comments: Solo ascent to Summit. South Peak spur trail not broken out since most recent snow- did not go there.
Fresh snow yesterday- a trace on the frozen parking lot in the morning but amounts increased with elevation and the summit ridge had 6" of new powder on a hard frozen base. Due to the hard frozen base, no postholes on Glencliff Trail or Carriage Road.
Overcast all day so no softening of snow by sun. Temp at trailhead started around 30F with frozen ground, but ground at trailhead softened as temps rose above freezing. At higher elevations temperatures were in the 20s so no softening or melting.
Started with Kahtoola Microspikes, then at about 3000 ft switched to MSR ascent snowshoes for the rest of the hike. Either spikes or snowshoes could be used, snowshoes preferred.
Above treeline, strong winds and low visibility due to blowing snow and low clouds. Had some difficulty finding 2 of the cairns due to the poor visibility and the ice covered cairns look like the small ice covered trees. Strong winds above treeline. The summit sign was covered in ice and not readable. At the summit sign, the wind was strong enough to cause difficulty standing at times. Wind sculpted snow and large patches of ice above treeline.
