Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes, Light Traction, Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: A bunch of them but all easy rock hops today
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: A few blowdowns, usual amount for early spring. Lots of ice-encrusted leaners on the ridge. It’s designated Wilderness, but I would not be sad to see a few more yellow blazes. I have done this trail many times and found it difficult to stay on course in a few spots today, including the infamous lefthand turn...

Comments
Comments: Footing was great to start off - spiked it over the hardpacked frozen granular. As the trail steepened, I wished we’d brought crampons today although I don’t remember ever needing/wanting them on the steeps of Pine Bend Brook Trail! An inch or two of new snow complicated matters a bit and caused some balling later on.

Once on the ridge we switched to snowshoes for the out and back to Middle. Lots of ice-encased trees up there. Watch out when this stuff starts melting! Still a winter wonderland right now, with 3-4 feet of snow.

We did some butt sliding on the return, but on the longer, steeper straightaways it was just too fast and unsafe given the current conditions. So, back in spikes, we picked our way down the sketchier stuff.

We followed some other snowshoe prints off trail just to see where they went, so there are some meandering routes lower down. Finally we did a short bushwhack to Forest Road 137 and were treated to some new views (of North Tri, Scaur Peak, The Fool Killer, and Greens Cliff). Pretty nice for a road walk (it was snow covered and gated), and it popped out on the Kanc within sight of the car.

Lots of critter tracks, no people!
