Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Lot was patchy. Some bare ground and some ice. But decent overall.

Surface Conditions: Ice - Blue, Snow/Ice - Frozen Granular, Snow/Ice - Monorail (Stable), Snow/Ice - Postholes
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Traction
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Both the crossing at the Sandwich Mtn Trail and Drake’s Brook Trail are getting tricky. Snow bridges are pretty eroded and we had to walk in the water at each - and the water is starting to flow real quick and deepen.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The trail blazes could really use some attention - especially along all of Drake’s Brook Trail and at both trail’s water crossings. It’s difficult to tell where the trail picks up across the water.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Didn’t see any.
Bugs
Bugs: Didn’t see any.

Comments
Comments: Sandwich Mtn Trail has several really steep and treacherous icy sections. It was very hard not to slide down the embankment into the first water crossing. The more aggressive spikes of Hillsounds fared better than Microspikes, though a crampon would have been a better option for that section and a couple more lengthy sections leading up to Noon Peak. There was a good length of the Jenning’s Spur in that same hard icy condition where crampons would be better. Between Jennings and Sandwich spikes were fine today but if temps increase into the mid to upper 30s or higher - snowshoes are a must. Drake’s Brook Trail didn’t have the nasty steep icy sections that Sandwich Mtn Trail had and spikes worked well. Recommend having a good sharp point on spikes for the whole loop. If yours are worn and rounded - it’s a recipe for disaster on those long steep icy sections and you may actually not be able to get up them at all.
