Almost turned back before summit. Recommended equipment is SNOWSHOES though I did not bring any - they were in the car. Probably should have returned for them. Absolutely no snow in the woods at the top of Pike Hill Road. About halfway up hit a few patches at the place where the trail and stream coincide. Figured snow was just deep because I was on the west side of the mountain - looked a bit better heading up from the col to the ridge (the left turn). Things were about to get worse..... snow had melted just enough to not support trail runners. I punched through multiple times, sometimes above my knees. Does not get any better in the swampy area near the summit. Just got worse. Followed postholes of giant moose feet. I kept thinking it couldn't get any worse... just was horrible. NOTE TO FUTURE SELF: just because it's April and this peak is a 2K doesn't mean to leave the snowshoes behind!!! I will probably totally forget today and do it again next April.... grrrrr |
