Comments
Comments: Was going to do this loop clockwise but the way the cloud cover looked I decided to go counter to give Mt. Height more time to clear. Needed snowshoes from the junction of Carter Dome trail until I hit the big stream crossing on CD trail near the last third of the loop. Carter Moriah trail is just silly steep and loaded with snow and ice from Carter Notch up. You could use crampons but once you hit the ridge snowshoes are the weapon of choice. Take your shoes off as you top out on Height but then carry them about 25 yds down once you descend towards Zeta Pass because you will need them again. If you hit this tomorrow expect to deal with post hole hell.

I'm going to try to say this without coming across as a total D bag. Why would anyone try to summit these ridges without snow shoes? If you plan on making an alpine start of 1100 you will probably encounter really soft, deep snow. I ran in to at least twenty people coming up CD trail that did not have anything but spikes. Many were planning to go to the hut after descending Carter Dome. I have no idea how you could descend that without serious traction? Hope everyone made it down ok. Some had 40+ lb packs on.
