After hiking Champney Falls it was only about 11:00 so I decided to keep hiking. I drove the 20 minutes from Champney Falls to the South Moat Trailhead. Due to ongoing harvesting there's a slight detour marker with surveyor's tape at the beginning of the trail. The first 1.5 miles are pretty moderate. After that there's more gain and tougher footing. Nothing super challenging. I got sidetracked right about there and ended up on a shoulder about .5 or .7 miles from the actual summit. Pretty nice place for a break though! Found my way back to the trail and headed for the summit. It gets a little steeper and there are some ledges that can be very slippery. No snow or ice left though! Beautiful views from the top. Clear all the way to Mount Washington in all his glory! |
