gruesome patches of postholes in places from the weekend thaw. Most of the trail through the hardwood section a mess. Once past the spring the trail got a little smoother and from Starr King to Waumbek actually pretty good...nicer snowshoe track with only a few sections of postholes though one sent me flying. .There were fresh tracks past the viewpoint towards Weeks but I do not know how far they went.Followed an old track across the "winter route" on the ridge on return which petered out in a maze of spruce traps after awhile .. 3 feet plus of snow along the ridge at this point. To avoid many of the postholes on descent I followed many herd paths through the woods where the snow was fine. Spikes were manageable to Starr King on ascent..put on snowshoes there and wore them back to the car.. Others I saw today were in snowshoes though one couple was struggling along without them. Beautiful in the woods today with an inch or 2 of fresh snow on everything |
