I'd been meaning to check this new trail out for a while, but Jeremy beat me to it. :)
Brooks Fisher Trail, opened last year by SLA, ascends very gently for 1.5 mil to the ridge via switchbacks and has excellent, easy footing. There is some sidehilling which my body didn't notice until the descent. Details on this trail are non-existent on the SLA website. It meets the ridge 0.9 mi. north of Old Mountain Road. Parts of the trail touch on pieces of the long-abandoned Prospect Trail, and in fact the new trail starts and ends at the same places where the old one did, according to Gaia GPS. I looked for traces of the old corridor as I intersected it, but it's pretty much been reclaimed by the forest.
Once on the ridge, I continued up to Webster, picking up this section of CRT for redlining. I did the bushwhack to the high point of the peak. While short, it was steep through scrappy woods. The summit has no register but does have a cairn. I followed the same route out.
Very, very hot today. I was thankful for the shade of the forest. Not too many exposed areas on this hike. The best view was from the cleared vista along CRT. There are a couple of other ledge viewpoints, but they are pretty restricted now. |
