Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Crossings of Liberty Brook and the upper crossing of Lincoln Brook were easy rock hops.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: The maintained trails were in good shape except for some muddy spots. The worst of the mud can be avoided by using the high and dry by-passes. Even the unmaintained trails were in decent shape.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw one dog just above the Owl's Head slide. The slide may be difficult for dogs not comfortable on loose rock slopes.
Bugs
Bugs: None, even in the wetland areas.

Comments
Comments: I decided to use the Black Pond herd path to avoid the major brook crossings on the official trails. The southerly end of the Black Pond herd path is not well defined. I ended up veering off the path so I headed easterly through the mainly open ground towards Lincoln Brook and ended up at Fisherman's herd path. I took this route that parallels Lincoln Brook until it met the Lincoln Brook trail. On the return trip I was able to easily follow the Black Pond herd path almost all the way to Black Pond whereupon I improvised a route to the pond. The large cairn on Owl's Head has been removed. There was a minute pebble cairn at the top. The cairn was still intact at the junction of Lincoln Brook Trail and the Owl's Head Path.
Nice to see Old Mountain Saw on Owl's Head. Guided a Kansas couple in the off trail portion of the hike. Lots of hikers heading to 13 Falls for an overnight stay.
