Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Wet Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Many stream crossings, the major ones on Cascade Brook and Whitehouse Brook were easy because water levels were low on a day BEFORE predicted rain.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Descending Cascade Brook Trail at twilight it's easy to miss the crossing of Whitehouse Brook; I went down a side trail that led to nowhere before realizing I was off the trail. Also, I didn't see signage for the Cascade-Basin Trail (?), only a puzzling sign with an arrow point to the "Pemi" Trail--had to direct some tourists who were lost at the Cascade Brook crossing.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Saw many dogs, these are all reasonably dog-friendly trails although a timid talk might balk at some of the slabs you need to climb (not exactly scrambles) on Kinsman Pond and Kinsman Ridge trails.
Bugs
Bugs: no significant problems

Comments
Comments: Parked at Liberty Springs trailhead, after going partly up Cascade Brook Trail made a loop, going up via Kinsman Pond Trail and down via Fishing Jimmy. I decided to do this after reading a blog that mentioned scrambles on the Kinsman Pond Trail that would be hard to descend. But there aren't any real scrambles there, and I met hikers coming down who had no problems. That said, like other trails on the Kinsman Ridge the Kinsman Pond is somewhat rough, and damp even in dry weather, so it could be difficult during or after rain. On the other hand, Fishing Jimmy has some reverse climbing (on the descent), and the upper part of the Cascade Brook Trail (AT) is not fun, heavily eroded with lots of rock hopping that will slow you down and could be tricky in the rain. Because it was getting dark when I finished, I road-walked on US-3 back to the car with no problems after crossing under the I-93 bridge over Whitehouse Brook--easier than negotiating the Whitehouse Trail in lengthening shadows.
