Cates Hill Trail (yellow); Mt. Jasper Trail (blue)
I hiked to Mt. Jasper twice, from the north and from the south. There is a third approach from a cemetery… but I didn't have time.
Cates Hill Tr: I noted the sign and gate… and seeing nothing but boggy mud, I decided to walk around through the woods. But lo' and behold, the trail begins just to the left, in the woods, thereby bypassing the mud pit. The trail is largely an ATV trail, lightly blazed. I missed when the trail took a sharp right and changed from woods road to single track hiking trail. But once I sensed I was going the wrong direction, I backtracked and saw a pile of rocks. No signage… but when you hit the "No ATV" sign, be on the lookout for this right hand turn.
Mt. Jasper Tr: Park at Berlin High School near the track. Walk along the R side of the fence, and within a few yards there is a large kiosk. Lovely trail. Steep, but lots of well place stone steps.
The view from the summit ledge is quite nice and rewarding. Sweeping view south overlooking Berlin, and views down towards the Whites.
Noteworthy: Mt. Jasper is a prehistoric archaeological lithic (rock knapping) site in Berlin, New Hampshire. ... The mountain is a source of rhyolite, apparently prized for its qualities in the manufacture of stone tools. |
