Trails are in good shape overall. Near the top of Black Cap there is some widening of trail where people are apparently trying to avoid walking on rocks. Cranmore Trail is a bit rutted in a couple of spots likely due to bike use...not a complaint, just an observation. Trail sign @ Black Cap/Cranmore junction states 1.8 miles to Cranmore but WMG map states 1.2 (?). It seemed like the latter to me based on time (didn't record a track to verify). |

After finishing a hike right down the street I decided to come here and spend some time wandering. Black Cap is a fun area to explore - lots of viewpoints scattered about. I backtracked a bit and headed W to Cranmore where the lift was running but I didn't see a single person on it - though there were a few people on the grub deck. Nice views at the top though obstructed by the infrastructure.
I was surprised to find a lesser crowd than I expected on Black Cap - and hardly anyone on Cranmore Trail. These trails are used by mountain bikers so be aware if hiking here.
Looks like the summit of Cranmore was set up for a wedding. If it's tonight it's going to be chilly! |
