Comments
Comments: Belknap Range. Trail conditions: One word--ridiculous. Started fine, only one person on snowshoes must have went up fire road/ Round Pond Trail in the past week or so, but their tracks froze and the snow around it is soft, so plenty of unexpected ankle twisting potential. Early on the trees were beautifully coated in ice and was cool to listen to plinking like broken glass. Once at Belknap Range Trail area, things were different, very heavy ice coating, about an inch thick made it look like the ice storm of a few years ago--trail toward Klem obliterated!! Small trees were bent low, ice on truck obscuring blazes, and no track whatsoever as if no one hiked it this winter. Occasionally broke through the crust to posthole to crotch, even with snowshoes. Decided to give up on Klem and Mack, and just headed to Round Pond, which was beautiful in winter, but the plinking ice was now thumping and bringing down small branches so I decided to head out. On trail to pond I fell into a small sinkhole to waist, water must have eroded ground beneath. Might be best to wait till ice melts to try to use center part of Belknap range trail, which was also unbroken headed to Belknap.
