One big blowdown between Starr King and Waumbek summits. Not too difficult to climb over. |

No snow for the first 1.9 miles, then spotty and avoidable snow/monorail until a few hundred yards below the summit of Starr King. From that point on you get the typical spring monorail -- but it's so narrow (think balance beam) that I doubt snowshoes would do much good. We brought them but didn't see the point in using them...the others we saw also kept theirs strapped to their packs. The snow is, at worst, about 2 feet deep if you do end up punching through, and the snow coverage, even between Starr King and Waumbek, is not consistent. Light traction is helpful. |
