Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Mt. Hayes, NH
Trails
Trails: Mahoosuc Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, May 22, 2011
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Hogan Road "rough but sound" (WMG). Some mud, but no bogs; plenty of potholes, but most are avoidable with caution; at least one bottom-scraping dip (oops); the one bridge requires careful tire placement. Adequate parking across from hydro station at 4.5 miles - don't go farther, as a culvert just past the actual trailhead looks like a real bottom-scraper.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Wet Trail, Mud - Significant, Standing/Running Water on Trail
Recommended Equipment

Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: No issues
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trail generally in good shape in re: blowdowns (though there were a couple), blazing, brushing, and signage. A little obscure in a couple of places due to minor blowdowns and old logging roads.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes:
Bugs
Bugs: Present, but not too bad, thanks in part to a breeze.

Comments
Comments: Trail was okay - some muddy areas, some places with water flowing along trail - with good view potential from ledges along summit ridge (clouds limited views today). Hogan Road was the adventure -- not terrible, but definitely rough, and low-clearance vehicles could have real difficulties. From signage, it LOOKS like there is an alternate hiking approach from the north via the railroad bridge, but it's not clear if the parking and access to this route are official (1Happy Hiker had some relevant commentary in his blog - which I saw after this hike).
