With rain starting, I initially changed plans and hiked to Mud Pond. Trail was generally dry with some minor mud and a few places of standing/running water near Mud Pond.
Rain let up on my way back, so I went back to plan B (plan A had been Pliny, but it was borderline pouring when I arrived at that trailhead, so I headed back south), and bushwhacked up from north of the ponds. Slides were too slippery and steep to attempt, so I headed up the steep scrub alongside them. Poor footing with plenty of random boulder postholes. As the grades eased higher up, the footing improved and the soft woods opened up.
If one intends to sign in at the recognized summit, they may want to bring a pen and paper.
For the descent, I headed into the drainage to the northeast, which wasn't as steep. Footing still iffy on the lower half. Like with the ascent route, the woods weren't particularly good going either. Ended up maybe hitting an old logging road, which dumped me into open woods near the trail. |
