| Parking/Access Road Notes: |
The last few hundred meters of road before the parking lot are badly rutted, perhaps residuals from Irene. I used my 4WD. It would be adventurous with 2WD. |

| Comments: |
The Gleason Trail has numerous blowdowns and a lot of ice, along with much bare ground more than half-way up. The top one-third of the trail is covered with 2-10" of snow, plus many, many Bullwinkle tracks and other evidence of large brown cloven-hoofed mammals. It will all assumedly be covered well by the upcoming storm. If we don't get the expected snowfall, I would suggest staying off the Gleason Trail until we do. The ice and blowdowns, often alongside each other, make it a more difficult hike that it should be.
If you have some need to ascend Sandwich from the south, use the Bennett Street Trail. It's a bit longer, but it's gradual and has way fewer blowdowns and somewhat less ice and bare ground. I used micro-spikes, but if you felt like carrying snowshoes, you could use them on the uppermost sections. Not necessary, though. |
