Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: First crossing done with a bit of thinking, but done without getting wet. The second crossing was a little deeper, I went tried my new boot covers on the way up, worked well and on the way down i was able to get across with snowshoes on. They gave me a just enough extra height to keep my boots from getting flooded. The two crossings coming down from Mount Tom as the switchbacks were low but the snow banks were high up on each side. You need to climb down and up to cross.

Trail Maintenance Notes: Usual spring tree litter and a few duck unders on the Avalon trail.

Comments
Comments: Finally the sun came out so I got myself out for these three. Trail starts as packed snow mixed with bare ground ( mostly wet). Last nights snow was melting fast in the warm sun on the trail and on me. I hiked in bare boots till I hit Avalon spur and then put on snowshoes until back down to last mile or so. Lots of frozen postholes especially after the Avalon spur to Mount Field. Some were several feet deep! I walked around some sections with my snowshoes to avoid rolling into them. Conditions were better to Willey and to Tom. I really enjoy descending that section from Field to Tom. Snow got softer as day went on and kinda slippery with or without traction. Definitely spring hiking with a bit of everything.
