Ice and Coyotes. From the half way point of the trail to the summit, I was followed by a howling pack of coyotes (4-6 total?). For the decent, they followed me ALL the way down, getting very close, and then backing away, only to get close again. I couldn't tell if the were stalking me, investigating me, or just following and then avoiding me, but man, that was an intense morning hike in the belknaps! I'd be lying if I didn't say I was scared. First time hiking I wish I had a real weapon in ten years! I've heard coyotes in this area before too. Hike was between 8-10am.
Definitely bring microspikes, recent rains reduced what little snow there was and there are many long areas of exposed ice and blue ice bulges, fortunately enough frozen snow to avoid the areas the micropsikes would not be able to hold in the ledgy areas. Barebooting would be unwise and inefficent. |
