 | Comments: |
Very little snow for the first half mile - blue ice prior to the second field (Microspikes sufficed), then bare ground on the second field, then minimal snowpack starting on the ridge above the Hurricane Trail junction.
Snow depths started to increase as the trail started to slab. The ice bulge many have mentioned is quite impressive - never seen anything like it on this trail before. People are using a herdpath to the right of it (uphill) to get around it.
Starting around the steeps, the trail was drifted in, and was re-drifted minutes later. First portion of Carriage Road was still broken out, however as treeline was neared, portions were drifted in.
Very windy on the ascent of the summit cone. Hardpack snowfields up there - used them on the way back to get a little out of the way of the direct wind.
Wore snowshoes for the entire ascent. Put on Microspikes for the last half mile of the descent. While one could probably do this on Microspikes without much issue right now, the risk of the winds and above treeline navigation is such that having snowshoes in the event of losing the trail or having to bail due to the wind is a good idea. |
