Comments
Comments: Crawford Notch received 6-8" new snow, but the new cover deepens to about 14" at the top. I made first tracks today, but it ended up being a very strenuous trip up the Avalon Trail. The top half-mile was a sea of snowdrifts. There was wave after wave of 3-4' deep drifts, and the snow was just consolidated enough to hold part of a person's weight before breaking through. The Willey Range Trail north to the AZ intersection was similar for about a quarter-mile or so, but it was not quite as difficult to deal with because it is downhill. Just before I got back down to my own tracks at the AZ/Avalon split, there were two other folks coming up toward Mt Tom. Assuming they went all the way, the route to Mt Tom is now packed pretty well and easy to negotiate.
