A mix of dry trail, wet trail, and ice/snow. I went up the Drakes Brook Trail which is mostly bare ground until a couple miles in when it gives way to persistent ice and snow. I put on microspikes here but later went back to bare boots as bare ground began to dominate once again. The section between the Jennings Peak trail junction and Sandwich Dome has a thin layer of ice covering most of the trail. I bare-booted this up but used microspikes to help with traction coming down. The Sandwich Mtn Trail is almost completely snow/ice free below the junction with the Drakes Brook Trail with the exception of a few icy spots at the higher elevations.
I've never done this hike before but it has some really great views on both Jennings Peak and Sandwich Dome. A worthy non-4000 foot peak. Had the mountain to myself on this windy but clear and warm day. |
