Hiking Trail Conditions Report
Peaks
Peaks Bear Mountain, NH
Trails
Trails: Bear Mountain Trail, Elwell Trail, Goose Pond Green Loop, roadwalk
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Saturday, April 21, 2012
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: Plenty of parking in the large sandy lot off Bear Mountain Road (right before Panorama Lane turns to the right). This requires a walk up Bear Mountain Road/Old Hebron Turnpike for about 0.7 miles to get to the trailhead for the Bear Mountain Trail. One can also drive up this road -- it's a bit rough for vehicles with low clearance -- and park in an open area just past the trailhead; there's room here for one or two vehicles.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Dry Trail, Mud - Minor/Avoidable
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment:
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Water crossings were not an issue -- conditions are very dry and stream/brook levels are low.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Trails are in decent shape; a few very small blowdowns here and there on the Bear Mountain and Elwell trails -- could be removed with a handsaw.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Not much water for dogs.
Bugs
Bugs: Black flies were very annoying -- and aggressive. Looks like the season is upon us.

Comments
Comments: We did a short loop by driving up Bear Mountain Road/Old Hebron Turnpike and parking right past the trailhead for the Bear Mountain Trail, an old Camp Mowglis trail that cuts directly up the eastern face of Bear Mountain, and then coming down the Elwell Trail to where it intersects the road, and walking the 0.1 miles back to the car.

The Old Hebron Turnpike south of the Elwell Trail is now blazed with green paint and sign-posted as part of the Goose Pond Loop (Wellington State Park). We followed this for a mile or so to where it intersected with the white-blazed Sugarloaf Mountain Trail, another recently blazed path (snowmobile trail in winter) that heads up the back of Big Sugarloaf Mountain.

Along all trails are plenty of wildflowers blooming: red trillium, Dutchman's breeches, sessile bellwort, and hobblebush.
