Parked at Beaver Brook Picnic area and walked to Gale River Tr. on the XC ski trail and road. No one has recently hiked on this trail. Trail covered by 2 to 4" of powder snow. I barebooted to 1st crossing. Put on microspikes and tried the iced over river without pack, then with pack. The same on the second crossing. I did not think I could cross Gale River with so much water running above the ice, however, the trail crossings were better ice bridged than at any other portion. I am a light person so I think that worked to my advantage. All the trails had been well packed by snowshoers, before a recent snowfall, so with the microspikes I was able to get easily up to Galehead and within 0.2 of a mile of S. Twin, where I changed to snowshoes. I was glad to see snowshoe tracks on S. Twin as I was not looking forward to hike over to N. Twin. I caught up with a solo hiker on the way back to N. Twin. Mike was very gracious when I asked him if he would mind hiking with him down N. Twin trail and to give me a ride back to my car. Mike was very gracious and it was nice to have a hiking partner. N. Twin trail was well packed out and the Little River crossing (3rd) was well iced over. In return for his favor I showed him the true bushwhack back to Little River Road. He had come in from 7 Dwarf Motel on the snowmobile trail and road, which we cut out on our way back. All high peaks were in the clouds. So no view today. |
