Comments
Comments: Despite some clouds around this was a fine hike. Shelburne trail from the lot follows a fairly new logging road for awhile then angles away from the road above an excellent gorge. Steady but mostly easy grade on fine footbed to just below the col where things got slippery and muddy for awhile. Climb to the first shoulder of Shelburne Moriah had a few slick spots but not bad at all. The first ascent to the sub alpine zone was excellent with fine local views towards Madison, to the North, and into the Wild River valley. In and out of the trees with fine open ledges makes this a favorite hike though we were in and out of clouds. Long sections of slanted and washed out bog bridges made microspikes a serious possibility on this wet day very slick greasy and slanted boards made for some slow going...Muddy in spots but a smooth ascent to Moriah where we actually hung out for awhile. Congrats to Valerie for round 7!!! The stretch down Carter Moriah across the ledges was mostly dry and good going with fine views. Stony Brook had some wet and washed out areas but mostly good footing and we made good time down to a fine swimhole at the end. Quite a cloud show coming down 93 as some massive thunderheads were evident though we never saw rain. Terrific day out with Becca , Valerie, and Andrea
