Parker Woodland Wildlife Refuge (Coventry/Foster). Coventry Loop (blue), Connector Trail (yellow), Foster Loop (blue). This might be the nicest of the Audubon Society of Rhode Island's refuges (debatable). You can go for a 7-mile hike over moderately rugged terrain (glacial moraine) with some huge boulders, hills, ledges, and brooks. There are some interesting historical features, such as old farm sites and cairns of unknown origin. Wildlife seen: chickadees; two different kinds of scat, one of which looks like fox scat, the other from a smaller mammal. There were some nice ice formations along the brooks, now that it's cold enough. |
