Peaks
Peaks Mt. Wilson, Breadloaf Mountain (attempt), VT
Trails
Trails: Clark Brook Trail,& Long Trail
Date of Hike
Date of Hike: Sunday, December 23, 2012
Parking/Access Road Notes
Parking/Access Road Notes: West Hill Rd (FR 55) was plowed for the first half mile. Beyond that, it had been plowed previously to the bridge across Clark Brook but had 3" of fluffy snow on it. We drove in .4 and parked at a small plowed lot with kiosk not wanting to attempt the hill. Someone drove to the bridge during the day, evidenced by tire tracks on our way out.
Surface Conditions
Surface Conditions: Snow - Unpacked Powder, Snow - Drifts
Recommended Equipment
Recommended Equipment: Snowshoes
Water Crossing Notes
Water Crossing Notes: Irene washed out the bridge across Clark Brook .5 miles from the trailhead. Water was running a little high but we were able to find a "relatively" dry way across.
Trail Maintenance Notes
Trail Maintenance Notes: Clark Brook trail was in good shape with new blue blazes. There were a number of blowdowns on the ridge Long Trail and basically no blazes to follow.
Dog-Related Notes
Dog-Related Notes: Opted to leave them home today. Conditions would have been tough on them.

Comments
Comments: We'd originally planned to use the Skylight Pond trail but FR 59 was blockaded .25 mile past the Burnt Hill trailhead, so instead of doing the longer road walk, we drove over to Granville to approach from the east.

Snow depth was about 8" at the trailhead with 3" of fluffy powder increasing to 2' with 10" of powder on the ridge. Under it all was a breakable crust which made for slow going. The final .25 mile of the Clark Brook trail required care to follow with the snow load in the trees.

Route finding on the ridge was a challenge due to the snow loaded trees and complete lack of blazing. A quarter of a mile west of Wilson we finally lost the trail and couldn't find where it left the ridge for the shelter. We searched around for it but by now it was nearly 2:30 so pulled the plug.
