Trail is bare for first 0.8 miles, then alternates between snow and bare spots for about a half-mile further, then turns to snow all the way to the summit. Snow was very soft and the trail was a mess of postholes. I seemed to be the only one that's used snowshoes on this trail in a while. But even in the snowshoes I was sinking in. It was like mid-April conditions rather than the last day of winter. Also, made the mistake of taking the 1903 trail on the way up instead of the 1857 trail at the junction. Not a good idea - soft unbroken snow and blowdowns made trail very hard to follow and to hike through. |
