Comments
Comments: Gradual ascent on Monroe Trail to the Alpine Trail junction. Monroe Trail was dry. Turned right on yellow-blazed Alpine Trail for 1.2 miles. Some exposed rock slabs on the way, each time giving us beautiful views on both sides, including interesting perspective of top of Camel's Hump. Between rock slabs trail is soft and mossy, with some steep descents that were slippery at times. We picked blueberries but left plenty for the critters. Reached the Long Trail and headed south to the Clearing Hut (0.8 miles). Long Trail had minor scrambles and semi-steep ascents with good traction on dry trail. We saw two LT through-hikers, NOBOs on their 16th day. We continued from Hut Clearing to summit and carried on quickly (to bypass all the people sitting on summit) over via LT north. Dry trail with light, cool breeze. Hiking around the west face of the Humpster is marvelous fun (or maybe nerve-racking if you get heights) with high-elevation exposure over protruding rock boulders and around ledges. But, it is a brief hike around the Hump's cone and the cliffs are spectacular and the views breathtaking. We soon reached the Alpine Trail that took us half-mile (on the way there is a spur that takes one to the B24-J bomber 1944 crash site) back onto Monroe Trail. Lots more people ascending, some with dogs - everyone looked happy as it was a beautiful day for a hike.
