Comments
Comments: Took Eagle's Cut trail and CCC road to Halfway House Trail. Halfway is a former bridle path. It is wooded with roots and rocks, a ladder, and gets gradually steeper with switchbacks. Some minor rock heave-ups and scrambles. Outstanding vistas on the way. There is a steep rock slab to climb and veer left to the Canyon North Trail junction (0.6 miles, yellow blazed). Canyon North is a bit more technical with tight squeezes between rock caves/crevices, also some rock hopping and climbing over rock boulders. Otherwise, outstanding views along exposed ledges of the Sunset Ridge trail. Had the privilege of seeing an owl flying between us quite low and landing on a tree branch, perched within clear sight. We continued on Canyon North Extension (also yellow-blazed). More squeezing into and through crevice and over open rocks with more open ledges with gorgeous views of Sunset Ridge. Nearer the end of trail, there is a large rock boulder to climb onto and it looked like the blaze indicated to go down a scary steep drop. I wanted to turn back, but then Joe spotted a blaze to the right, which made more sense. Still, good agility needed to scramble over rocks with crevices between them. Psyched ourselves up to take the Subway Trail (blue-blazed). More technical and care in footwork needed, but very short. Good to get onto the LT up to the Chin. Wind got blowy and a bit cold, but fantastic views. Came down Sunset Ridge. Tons of people, some with dogs coming up the Ridge. Great hike!
