Last one. First triple since 2013 when I was chasing grid nh. Ah good times. Again lots of ice once you transition from maples and birches to spruces and slabs. I was not going to do this hike (following my own advice of not starting out to late in the day), but my wife was late for our lunch date so I figured what the heck.
I got to the trail head about 2pm and new it would be tight to get up and back before dark. I had a young guy ask me when I got out of the car where Helles Brook was. I told him up the at and that I would be up shortly.
Unfortunately I was feeling my age on the way up and it took me a while to catch him. There were a lot of people headed down and a few large groups heading up to the cabin to overnight. Again almost no one had micros.
I asked my shadow if he had a headlamp and micros. He said yes but I saw evidence of neither. It's good to remember where I came from which was not knowing anything. He stayed close and I told him I would wait for him at the point which you go down the chin. It was pretty slick but with spikes was manageable. My new friend "Dave" managed to do it with nothing but rubber I was impressed. My buddy Wayne says "don't pick up strays" but I felt responsible and stayed with him to the bottom we got out at dusk. Hopefully accumulating a lot of good Karma for Maine in winter. |
