Road walk and climb were fine-- wore snowshoes as they offer the best grip on powder (we wore micros for a short time but too slippy-- not dangerous just inefficient. Higher up would have postholed). This was hike #2 of the day for us. Lots of people turning around because of the whiteout aloft. I had gps and was able to guide my group to the top where we found a couple who had already called for rescue. She had mild hypothermia. We provided hot drinks, layer, and food, talked to the state police and walked them down. Another person was still unaccounted for. Please turn around if you don't have navigational capability-- ie gps, and a good map and compass with premarked bearings and distances. The cairns peter out at some point and it is very difficult to navigate. The ice flows had me thankful for crampons. Micros worked, but you need to be very careful. |
