| Comments: |
The CCC Road, Eagles Cut, and Laura Cowles all had packed snow surface from heavy use, with about an inch or so of new powder. Towards the top of Laura, there were occasional streams flowing down the path and small gullys where the washouts happened. There was lots of ice but plenty of places to walk on hard snow. I had to kick my toe crampons in hard ice a few times to step forward/up. Overall I was pleasantly surprised how good the traction was and felt sure footed the whole time going up Laura. I used my Tubbs VRT's, though crampons would of been good too. Towards/on the summit it was really windy, visibility wasn't so good, though the hiking surface was hard packed and easy to move one. Finding the trail from Laura Junction to the West Chin was easy walking in hard drifts with a couple fun slides down steeper areas. Sunset Ridge had alot of exposed rock, snow, and soft ice...I had no problems going down. Great hike and it didn't seem the rain earlier the week did much damage up in the higher elevations. |
